A major earthquake of magnitude 6.4 on the Richter Scale struck northeast Assam on Wednesday morning. The earthquake was centred in Assam's Tezpur, but tremors were felt as far away as North Bengal and other parts of the Northeast.
The first earthquake struck at 7:51 a.m., 43 kilometres west of Tezpur in Assam, according to the seismology centre. Following the earthquake, there were seven aftershocks, the first at 7.58 a.m. and the last at 8.01 a.m. Over the next 2 hours 30 minutes, seven aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 3.2 to 4.7 were reported in the Sonitpur area of Assam.
