Tamil superstar Vijay was fined Rs 1 lakh by the Madras High Court for seeking exemption of tax on his imported Rolls-Royce Ghost worth Rs 6.95-7.95 crore. Justice SM Subramaniam dismissed the writ petition filed by Vijay in 2012 and used strong words against the superstar for trying to evade taxes.

"The petitioner has imported a prestigious costly car from England. But unfortunately not paid entry tax as per the statutes. He filed a writ petition in order to avoid payment of entry tax for the car imported from England,” read the court’s order.

“Their movies are against corrupt activities in the society. But, they are evading tax and acting in a manner, which is not in consonance with the provisions of the statutes,” Justice Subramaniam said in his order.

“If such was the situation, it would be a long way to achieve the constitutional goals,”  the judge observed.

Justice SM Subramaniam said that payment of tax is the duty of every citizen and is a mandatory contribution rather than a donation.

Vijay is currently shooting for his upcoming film Beast in Chennai. Touted to be an action-thriller, the film’s title along with its first-look poster last month on the star’s birthday. Beast  stars Pooja Hegde as the female lead.
