At least 38 inmates were killed and dozens more injured after a massive fire ripped through an overcrowded prison in South Africa's Burundi. The incident took place in the capital Gitaga jail before dawn on Tuesday.
The blaze broke out at about 4:00 am (0200 GMT) in the century-old prison. Burundi's government says 38 prisoners were killed and more than 60 other people have been injured. Victims with the most serious burns were taken to hospital, some ferried in police pick-up trucks, while others with milder cases were treated at the scene.
The prison in Gitega is overcrowded with more than 1,500 inmates in cells designed to hold 400, according to local reports.
